Mission & Vision

Family farming is the backbone of food production in Western Africa, accounting for over 90% of food produced and employing around 60% of the workforce. Recognizing the enormous potential within this sector, Fondation de France sees family farming as a pivotal force in addressing not only hunger and unemployment but also in tackling broader issues such as rural flight, environmental degradation, climate change, and the impact of global pandemics. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, the foundation aims to empower local communities, reduce poverty, and contribute to a more resilient and self-sufficient future for the region.

Actions Led

Since 2016, Fondation de France has been an active participant in the Joint Action for Farmers’ Organizations in West Africa (JAFOWA program), a collaborative initiative with three other European and American foundations. This program is dedicated to mobilizing and supporting farming organizations across West Africa, focusing on the development of ecological and sustainable farming practices. By providing resources, training, and support, the program helps women, young people, and entire communities become more self-reliant. Through these efforts, JAFOWA has strengthened local capacities, enabling communities to resist external disruptions and contribute to national and regional development.

Projects that US Donors Can Support

US donors have the unique opportunity to contribute to the JAFOWA program, directly impacting the future of West African farming organizations. Your support can help these organizations innovate, share knowledge, and collaborate more effectively, leading to tangible changes on a national and regional scale. By bolstering their advocacy work and enhancing cooperation with local and national authorities, your contributions will empower these communities to create lasting, positive change, ensuring food security and economic stability for future generations.
