Mission & Vision
Les Musiciens du Louvre, founded in 1982 by Marc Minkowski, are celebrated for their mastery of the French repertoire, spanning from Lully to Offenbach and iconic works like Bizet’s Carmen—the most performed opera in the world. Distinguished by their transversal approach to French music, they embrace diverse styles and eras rather than focusing on a single historical period. Their mission is to revive Baroque, Classical, and Romantic masterpieces on period instruments while fostering artistic innovation and excellence with established stars and emerging talents.
The ensemble combines meticulous research with artistic creativity, bringing many forgotten and incomplete musical masterpieces back to life. Landmark achievements include world premiere recordings as well as restored works by Mouret, Mondonville, and Offenbach. The first early music orchestra to be invited to the Vienna Staatsoper, Les Musiciens du Louvre perform in France and around the world at prestigious venues and festivals that celebrate their unique art, such as Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence.
With a bold ethos of rediscovery and reinvention, their vision is to make classical music accessible to ever-growing audiences while inspiring new generations of performers and listeners each season. They embody a spirit of curiosity, presenting timeless works as if for the first time, and continually exploring fresh artistic territories.
Actions Led
Renowned for their artistic achievements, Les Musiciens du Louvre also demonstrate a strong commitment to societal impact and education. Their outreach efforts bring the joy and richness of classical music to schoolchildren, families, and aspiring musicians, while addressing the needs of vulnerable communities in France and beyond.
For schoolchildren, the ensemble organizes interactive workshops, live rehearsals, and specially tailored events in cities like Toulouse and the Paris suburbs. These programs introduce young audiences to classical masterpieces and the magic of live performance, inspiring curiosity and fostering an early appreciation for music.
Families and young audiences benefit from dynamic multimedia experiences. From regional family concerts in Voiron to inventive performances blending music, theater, and puppetry at venues like the Philharmonie de Luxembourg, they make classical music accessible and engaging for all generations.
Their Académie des Musiciens du Louvre provides young instrumentalists, young conductors, and young opera singers with hands-on experience in major productions, such as La Vie Parisienne and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme at prestigious venues like the Opéra-Comique and the Opéra de Vichy. Additional initiatives, including Mozart masterclasses in Saint-Jean-d’Acre and auditions to identify new talent in Paris, help shape the next generation of musical talent.
Their social contributions also extend to vulnerable groups. In December 2022, they organized a music workshop for Ukrainian refugees in emergency accommodations in Grenoble. Similarly, in June 2023, they conducted a rehearsal, workshop, and concert for asylum seekers, women victims of violence, and individuals facing precarious situations.
These actions demonstrate their dedication to using music as a tool for education, healing, and connection.
